A creative collaboration with the artist on her personal understanding of the coherence-error collection and using characters as self-expression for crossing the cultural stereotypes in society. Expressing oneself in a world to stand out from the telecasted revolution. Hip hop culture has revolved around the idea of updating classic things for modern audiences. It was also a form of expression for the communities whom the public and political discourse had written off as marginalized. The fashion expressed the artists’ masculinity, intimidation, wealth- aunting, entrepreneurship but most importantly their identity. A lot of things which were not necessarily thought of as cool before were made cool through the art, clothes, songs, celebrities, etc. And a major part of it was embracing yourself and expelling the toxicity from your life.

The iteration of which we can now see, in the millennial era. 

 

The first print follows on this theme of self-care. Self-care is the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well being and happiness, during periods of stress. The hermit is flipping off the unnecessary people, things and vibes, all the while being deep in meditation and maintaining his own identity. Also, the tilak which is usually the Mahakaleshwar tilak is replaced by a trident which is universal and often found on Indian trucks. The expression SELF CARE on his cheeks is in green to signify face masks, which come under the humorous category of the term. The theme of the second print is identity. I did wordplay on the highly used Indian slang word BINDAAS as BIND-ASS. And the font is inspired by the Bronx graffiti. The two grey elephants below depict a crowd which is following the traditional path. And the yellow elephant in-the-middle is going against it as it owns up to its identity. The elephants, the colour scheme and the slang are inspired by Indian truck art.
